The “Nest”! Does it work?

I recently changed over my thermostat from the dinosaur mercury laden type from the 90’s to a new Honeywell programmable thermostat. Well what a difference! I should have done this years ago! With the cost of these programmable thermostats dropping and the price of heating fuel rising, its a no brainer not to have one in your home. Forever forgetting to turn down the heat when we went to bed or left for the day, ripping through oil was costly!

This new programmable baby has definitely shrunk our oil consumption and has roughly saved us around $700 this year! For a $30 dollar investment I would say that this is a significant savings! No more forgetting to turn down the heat. Program the times and temps and walk away!

So just the other night I ran across the “new” thermostat. The “Nest”. Of course with technology invading every facet of our lives these days, the “Nest” is no exception. It actually learns your habits! All you need to do is set the temperature at various times of the day as you would the old dinosaur thermostats for about a week and it learns your habits and programs itself! It even has sensors that can tell if your not at home and goes into its away mode! You can also change the temperature right from your phone!

Although a bit expensive, the “Nest” seems pretty ingenious! Learning habits and being able to sense when one’s not home is quite clever! Over time it should be able to save you a bunch of money in heating and cooling costs. If building a new home I would definitely look into having this installed but until the price comes down I think I will stick with my new self-programmable thermostat.

Check it out!
